First stained glass in its most perfect form was created in the Middle Ages when the need to fill great surfaces of gothic cathedrals and castles windows arose. It started in France, then in other European countries, and through Czech it came to Poland. The oldest works in the collections of world art come from the 12th century and its character indicates the Greek and Byzantine origin. Stained glass makieng was very popular till the end of the 16th century and then it collapsed supplanted by painting on glass. |
The definitive end of this field of art took place in the selfsufficient in its rich abundance Baroque. In the 19th and 20th century famous French painters discovered the beauty and quality of stained galss and its renaissance started then. Nowadays in Poland stained glass makers are the least numerous group among other branches of art and their works can be admired first of all in sacred objects, in public objects such as restaurants, hotels or conference halls, and in private flats where they are the element of interior decor.
